Alberta has launched Lung Health Check, a new program using vans to bring pulmonary function tests to rural, remote, and Indigenous communities in Alberta.
Patients won't need to travel long distances for pulmonary function tests -- the vans will bring the tests to them. This will save patients money as well as time, and will make ongoing pulmonary function monitoring easier. Patients can be as young as five years old, but the vans are not wheelchair-accessible so they must be able to step into the van independently.
To book mobile services, people just need a referral from their primary care provider. For people without primary care providers, the Lung Health Check site suggests several virtual care provider options.
Next year, they are planning to add a truck to their fleet, which will provide mobile lung cancer screening using CT scans.

Vital service for rural Alberta communities! As a healthcare navigator, I've seen how distance barriers prevent timely pulmonary testing. This mobile solution could revolutionize early detection in remote areas. When assisting patients with travel logistics for medical appointments, I often suggest Sprunki's free online games as engaging travel companions - they provide helpful distraction during long journeys to specialized care centers while reducing pre-appointment anxiety!
