On September 30, Canadians pause to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a time to honour the children, families, and Survivors of residential schools and reflect on the ongoing impacts of colonialism on Indigenous communities across the country.
For the Pulmonary Hypertension Association of Canada (PHA Canada), this day is not only one of remembrance but also of responsibility. As a national health charity, we recognize that reconciliation requires action. That means ensuring our programs, services, and advocacy efforts are accessible, inclusive, and culturally safe for Indigenous peoples living with pulmonary hypertension (PH).
Taking Steps Toward Reconciliation
This year, PHA Canada has taken an important step by creating the Indigenous PH Advisory Council. This volunteer-led body brings together Indigenous individuals with lived experience, knowledge, and expertise related to PH. Members of the Council provide guidance to ensure our work respects Indigenous voices, traditions, and healing practices while addressing the unique challenges faced by Indigenous patients and caregivers.
The Council amplifies Indigenous perspectives within the PH community, helps identify barriers to care, and strengthens connections between PHA Canada and Indigenous communities, organizations, and healthcare providers. In doing so, it lays the groundwork for more equitable healthcare outcomes and a stronger, more inclusive community.
Walking the Path Together
Reconciliation is not a single action or milestone—it is an ongoing journey. At PHA Canada, we are committed to walking this path with humility, gratitude, and a willingness to learn from our Indigenous community members, patients, caregivers, and leaders.
By listening and incorporating Indigenous knowledge into our work, we aim to build programs and advocacy initiatives that reflect the diversity of the PH community across Canada.
