Feeling the heat?

If you’re in central Canada, chances are you’re feeling the heat, as cities hit all-time record high temperatures.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation reminds people with heart conditions, such as Type 2 PH, and those taking diuretics or calcium channel blockers, that heat can be particularly dangerous for them. The job of diuretics, of course, is to get rid of fluid, so in extreme heat, this may lead to dehydration. And because they relax arteries, calcium channel blockers may lower blood pressure too much in extreme heat.

Here are their tips to stay as cool as possible:

  • Avoid dehydration. If you’re on fluid restrictions, consult your health care team for advice on hydration.

  • Avoid going outside in the middle of the day (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.)

  • If you don’t have air conditioning, visit a library, a mall, or a cooling centre.

  • Dress lightly but wear a hat if you go outside.

  • Cool your skin with a spray bottle or a damp cloth.
