Tackle the crackle! September is Global Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Month

Along with the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (CPFF) and the Canadian Thoracic Society, PHA Canada adds our voice in support of patients affected by pulmonary fibrosis.

September is Global Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Month—a time to shine a light on pulmonary fibrosis (PF), a disease involving inflammation and scarring of the lungs. As the scarring progresses, the lungs become less able to deliver oxygen to the body, making breathing increasingly difficult. PF is one of the interstitial lung diseases that can lead to Group 3 pulmonary hypertension, which occurs when PH develops in association with chronic lung disease or low oxygen levels.

As with pulmonary hypertension, PF can be challenging to recognize because its early symptoms often look like common respiratory problems. A persistent cough, shortness of breath with activity, ongoing fatigue, a distinctive “crackle” sound in the lungs, or unexplained weight loss are among the signs worth discussing with a healthcare professional. Earlier recognition can help people receive appropriate care sooner: many patients wait two years for a diagnosis, or even longer.

This month is an opportunity to learn a little more about PF, recognize its signs, and support the people who live with it. The Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation is marking the month with educational events, community activities, patient and caregiver stories, and opportunities to connect with others affected by PF. Its 2026 campaign, “Raise & Shine,” encourages Canadians to raise awareness, questions and hope while shining a light on pulmonary fibrosis and the people behind the disease.
