Men's Health Month: Shifting Perspectives on PH

In Canada and around the world, June is recognized as Men’s Health Month. Men often delay seeking medical care and discussing symptoms openly, so this month, there is a heavy emphasis on encouraging men to seek support and get checked for any health concerns.

The same pattern of delay in seeking medical care is also seen with pulmonary hypertension (PH), which mostly affects women. Despite the increased incidence of pulmonary hypertension in females, studies suggest that men with pulmonary hypertension face significantly higher mortality rates. This helps highlight the need for earlier recognition and diagnosis of PH in male patients.

A recent study had researchers dive deeper into this “sex paradox”, aiming to create better treatment plans for men with pulmonary hypertension. The analysis, which included over 21,000 patients diagnosed with PH, revealed that male patients were at a survival disadvantage, regardless of age, co-morbid health conditions, or treatment modalities. This was primarily thought to be due to the disease’s effects on the cardiovascular system, specifically right ventricular function. However, the underlying mechanism is not yet fully understood.

Ultimately, this glaring disparity requires more than just a generalized approach. Further studies are required to better understand the sex-based disparities in disease severity and treatment response. A shift to a more individualized treatment model is needed to improve patient outcomes and better address these sex-based differences in pulmonary hypertension care.

Bridging this gap is not easy. We must shift our perspectives from this being a disease that “mostly affects women” and encourage men to remain vigilant with their health and take any signs of illness seriously. This June, make your health a priority—listen to your body, speak to your healthcare provider, and don't wait to seek help when something doesn't feel right.
