What are stem cells and how can they potentially be used in medicine? Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that have the ability to become specialized cells. They also are able to make more copies of themselves. There are different types of stem cells including those found in embryos (embryonic stem cells) and those produced in the laboratory by treating normal adult cells such as from the skin or muscle to become stem cells (induced pluripotent stem cells).
