The mission of PHA Canada is to work within a united pulmonary hypertension community and to provide leadership in awareness, advocacy, education and patient support on behalf of all Canadians living with PH
Our vision is a better life for Canadians living with PH.
The Pulmonary Hypertension Association of Canada (PHA Canada) is a charitable organization that was established by patients, caregivers, parents and family members (collectively referred to as “Canadians living with PH” – the loved ones of those affected by PH also live with the disease) on the principles of ending isolation, providing education and creating a united Canadian PH community. We strive to work towards these goals every day by rallying the PH community from coast to coast, in every town, to come together and make sure that PH stops being the disease of which ‘no one has ever heard’.
PHA Canada’s mission is to work within a united pulmonary hypertension community and to provide leadership in awareness, advocacy, education and patient support on behalf of all Canadians living with PH. As such, funds raised for PHA Canada are currently allocated to programs, which support the Canadian pulmonary hypertension community.
These include, but are not limited to:
We are often asked about the possibility of designating donation funds for a specific area, particularly research. Please read the statement below from PHACanada’s Board of Directors with respect to funds designated for research. If you have any questions please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
As PHA Canada is still a relatively small organization, the Board of Directors does not currently feel that we have the adequate expertise and resources to undertake the huge responsibility of managing a research fund and determining how to allocate funds for research. The Board has determined that it is not within our current mandate to fund research. This is particularly the case as funding medical research requires a substantial amount of monies, which would take years to gather to a sum that would be able to make a meaningful contribution. In addition, there are currently other bodies, which are helping to support research in this important field. After consultations with Canada’s leading medical PH researchers, the Board of Directors has decided that funds raised for PHA Canada will make more of an impact at this time, if they are being allocated to advocacy, education and awareness projects, as well as towards helping build a network of support for PH patients across Canada. We hope that in supporting these types of projects, the awareness generated will,in turn, lead to larger amounts of funding being dedicated to research from other areas. The question of funding research is one, which the Board will continue to revisit as PHA Canada grows and may be something that we decide to undertake in the future, when the amounts of funding raised and infrastructure of the organization allow.
We currently have one area to which funds from fundraising events and/or personal pages may be designated. This area is the scholarship fund:
PH can be an expensive disease. For this reason, PHA Canada offers a scholarship program to create opportunities for patients and their caregivers who require financial assistance to attend and participate in educational events related to PH such as the National PH Conference. The Patient Scholarship Fund fills the gap for as many qualified patient applicants in need as we can support. All scholarship decisions are made by an anonymous Scholarship Committee, which includes only patients and caregivers. Funders are also blind to the awards process and have no role in evaluating or selecting recipients. Groups/individuals/special events, which contribute a minimum of$10,000 will have a Scholarship Fund created in their name (eg: My Special Event Scholarship Fund, Smith Family Scholarship Fund, Company XYZ Scholarship Fund etc.). These funds provide members of the community in financial need the opportunity to be part of the life-changing events that are Conferences and symposia.
Based upon need, PHA Canada Conference scholarships are awarded at three levels to cover the cost of the following:
Contributors to the fund are recognized in the Conference program book, on PHA Canada’s website and in the Pulse (PHA Canada’s monthly e-newsletter) as well as in Connections Magazine (a biannual publication) and PHA Canada’s annual report. Contributions to the general fund are also available; recognition is the same as above with the exception of a named fund(listed under general fund contribution i.e. General Fund – Smith Family -$2000, John Doe - $1000 etc.).
